Cantemus Cum Spiritu at Bath Abbey 3rd & 4th June 2023
Cantemus Cum Spiritu events are for advanced singers, and exist to allow people who are considered leaders within their own choirs to have the chance to come together to sing music to a high level. It is taken as read that, if you choose to apply for a Cantemus event, you will arrive either fully prepared musically or able to sight-read the music. The expected standard is that each singer will be capable of holding their own line, without the aid of singers around them, in order that, at the start of each event, we can hit the ground running and take your singing to another level. It is understood that, on a whole week’s course, it may not be possible to have all the music prepared but you are asked to arrive with the frst 3 services fully prepared.
Cantemus Cum Spiritu exists to help singers to find the joy in church music in the hope that the experience of working with other singers of a similar level will have a knock-on effect on the health and strength of their home choirs. We start each event from the point of being confident that we know the music, so that we have the chance to really explore the music and to enable all the singers to reach their expressive potential.
On 3rd & 4th June we will be singing at Bath Abbey. This will involve 3 services, Evensong on 3rd and one Eucharist and an Evensong on 4th. Bath Abbey is, without doubt, one of the finest Abbeys in the country and somewhere we have long been trying to arrange to sing. For that reason we are very excited about this weekend.
We will meet at 10.45m in the nave of the abbey on Saturday 4th, and begin rehearsals at 11am. The final service will be at 3.30pm on the Sunday, so we should be finished by 4.30pm.
The repertoire will include Rose responses, Statham in E Minor Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis, Noble in B Minor Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis, Elgar – The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Campbell – Sing we merrily , Schubert Mass in G, and Wesley – Thou willt keep him in perfect peace.
We invite people who consider themselves qualified for this course to apply for this course. You should apply if you feel that you can learn this music, without the need to rely on other singers to support you in singing your part.
This promises to be a glorious week. We will be limited to 40 places 16 Sopranos , 8 Altos, 8 Tenors, 8 Basses.
Uniform for the services will be white shirt (plain, with collar and long sleeves, tucked in), black skirt (of at least knee length) or trousers, plain black tie for the men, black shoes.
The price of the weekend is £70.00 This does not include accommodation or food. You are free to arrange your own accommodation.
