Choral Holidays - Singing in wonderful locations

Bolton Priory 14 - 17 May 2019

Bolton Priory 1 Bolton Priory 3 Bolton Priory 2

After the success of last year’s course we are returning to Bolton Priory for another 4 days of Choral Evensongs.

Bolton Priory, lies adjacent to the village of Bolton Abbey in North Yorkshire, and stands majestically on the banks of the River Wharfe, surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. It is one of the most beautiful and idyllic settings we have visited.

Lets get everybody’s first question out of the way straight away:

This course will take place indoors, in the warm, roofed nave of the priory

Bolton Priory founded in 1154 by the Augustinian order. The land at Bolton, as well as other resources, were given to the order by Lady Alice de Romille of Skipton Castle. In the early 14th century Scottish raiders caused the temporary abandonment of the site and serious structural damage to the priory.
The nave of the abbey church was in use as a parish church from about 1170 onwards, and survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Building work was still going on at the abbey when the Dissolution of the Monasteries resulted in the termination of the priory in January 1540. The east end remains in ruins. A tower, begun in 1520, was left half-standing, and its base was later given a bell-turret and converted into an entrance porch. Most of the remaining church is in the Gothic style of architecture, but more work was done in the Victorian era, including windows by August Pugin. It is still a working priory today, holding services on Sundays and religious holidays

Added Bonus
Last year we fulfilled a long held ambition and sang a service of Plainsong Compline in the early evening amongst the ruins. Imagine standing where the monks would have stood centuries a go and singing the same chants which they did all those centuries ago, as the sun begins to go down through the empty windows. We will be aiming to do this again this year.

Come along and join us in this perfect location for 4 days of music making which you will never forget.

The cost of the trip includes only the tuition and the music, which will be sent in advance. It does not include accommodation or food as we want people to be able to choose for themselves where they stay according to their own wishes, needs and budget.
