Choral Holidays - Singing in wonderful locations

A Summer Sanctuary - Lluc

Dome of basilica Lluc

Sanctuary Lluc, Mallorca 22nd – 28th May 2017

Think of Mallorca and you may well think of beautiful beaches, quiet coves or, if you’ve been unfortunate in your experience of the island, beer swilling Brits in noisy nightclubs.

But the North of the island offers less well known destinations of stunning beauty, and it is here that we have been fortunate enough to find the Sanctuary Lluc, the destination for our Summer Choral Holiday.

A drive through about 10 miles of mountain roads, with absolutely amazing views, leads us to the Sanctuary, a popular destination for thousands of pilgrims each year.

Legend has it that a monk and a shepherd found an image of the Madonna in a stream and took it to a nearby church where they planned to display it, in order that pilgrims could come and worship. However, the next day it had disappeared, only to be found in the same spot in which the monk and shepherd had first discovered it.

It was decided that this was a sign that God wanted a monastery built at that spot, and so, a church has stood on that site since about 1250. Nobody knows where the Madonna was carved or by whom, but it is known to be made of a rock which is not found on Mallorca. It is currently on display in the glorious basilica of the monastery.

What’s on offer on this holiday?
Our team, lead by Jeff Stewart, with assistance from Ben Saul will lead you through a late summer week of sacred and secular music in one of the most idyllic places imaginable.

Throughout the week we will be rehearsing for a concert of sacred music which will be held in the basilica at the Sanctuary.

The sanctuary doesn’t pretend to be a hotel. That said, we found that the rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable, with lovely thick mattresses on the beds and en-suite facilities in all rooms.

We anticipate that many of you will wish to spend time relaxing in the gorgeous gardens and just enjoying the peace of the sanctuary, and taking advantage of the swimming pool and the opportunity to hear the famous Blauets . You must feel free to do this. This is, after all your holiday, albeit a singing holiday so, if you don’t fancy coming on our trips and wish to just immerse yourself in the peace of this place, or just sit by the pool, that’s fine.

However, we plan several trips outside of the Sanctuary. There will be a trip to Valldemossa to see the monastery where Chopin stayed as well as the main museum and the Palace of King Sancho. Whilst there you will have the opportunity to hear a short concert of Chopin’s music. This is considered a must for anyone visiting this part of the island. We are planning a trip to Palma where we will arrange entry for you to the Cathedral, and you will have free time in Palma before travelling through the mountains to Soller on the world famous narrow gauge railway for our evening meal, a fabulous tasting menu of five courses at Ca’n Bouqueta food here is exquisite and will be accompanied by a seletion of the finest locally produced wines.

Few of those who came on our previous trip to Lluc will ever forget our lunch out at the Restaurant Es Guix set as it is beside a natural swimming pool. Josep and his team will once again be providing us with a sumptuous meal and gorgeous wines in this beautiful setting.

Accommodation and breakfast will be at the sanctuary, as will most of the evening meals. Each lunchtime you will be provided with a packed lunch.

Is it OK to bring a non-singing partner?
Absolutely, yes. There is so much to enjoy on this trip, even if you don’t sing

What will be included in the price?
The price covers your transfer from and to the airport and all trips during the holiday, your accommodation, all your food and your drinks with meals. It will also include entrance to the cathedral in Palma and the various attractions in Valldemossa, and your music, which, as previous guests on Choral Holidays will know, comes beautifully presented in an easy booklet.

What is not included in the price?
We don’t include flights in the price. We thought carefully about this and we decided against it. This is due in part to the fact that we just can’t afford the huge amounts of money involved in getting an ATOL licence in order to insure your flights. We also decided that booking a group flight with a carrier of high repute actually limits those of you who would rather not travel from London or who would rather save some money by flying with a budget airline.
Also, whilst we have our own public liability insurance, we strongly advise that you have your own travel insurance.

Is my money safe in the event of a disaster?
Yes. Choral Holidays are fully insured against financial failure and for public liability.
